The Department of Product and Systems Design Engineering, the Municipality of Syros-Ermoupolis, and the Directorate of Modern Cultural Heritage of the Ministry of Culture invite you to the opening of the temporary exhibition “From the Stern to the Bow: Sailing Ships of the 18th and 19th Century,” at the Industrial Museum of Ermoupolis, Georgiou Papandreou 11, in Ermoupolis.
The exhibition includes historical data on Greek sailing navigation during the 18th and 19th centuries, information on the most representative sailing ships, starting from the three ships for which three-dimensional representations were created, information about life on board, journeys, major ports of the era, and shipbuilding. Visitors can, through a virtual interactive game, design and “construct” their own ship. Additionally, the public has the opportunity for a virtual visit to a 19th-century sailing ship, using interactive methods that offer visitors a cultural experience through the use of virtual reality (VR) and an expansion of their knowledge through the use of additional augmented reality (AR) information and images.
Videos at the exhibition highlight the method of construction and “rigging” of 19th-century sailing ships through the process of modeling.
The exhibition is the result of the research program “Virtual Historic Sailing Ships” conducted by the Institute of Mediterranean Studies of the Foundation for Research and Technology (IMS-FORTH) in collaboration with the Department of Product and Systems Design Engineering of the University of the Aegean, the Folklore and Ethnological Museum of Macedonia – Thrace, and the company TETRAGON AE, funded by the Operational Program “Competitiveness, Entrepreneurship & Innovation”.
