Scorpios, the island inextricably linked with the Onassis family, remains an iconic symbol of wealth and luxury. Despite various changes, the name of Aristotle Onassis will forever be associated with this small piece of land. It is here, in 1973, that his son Alexander was buried, and two years later, Aristotle himself, followed by Christina Onassis in 1988, who joined her beloved family members in the family tomb.
Scorpios, part of the Prigiponisia of Lefkada, was purchased by the Greek magnate in 1963. Since then, it has undergone an impressive transformation. The island turned into a paradise, hosting some of the world’s most distinguished guests. From heads of state and prime ministers to Hollywood celebrities, Scorpios became a global elite’s hub.
Aristotle Onassis left nothing to chance when he transformed the island into a self-sustaining oasis. Hundreds of trees and plants from around the world were planted, exotic animals and birds were introduced, and tons of sand were transported from Salamis to the beaches. The facilities included the famous “Pink Villa,” marinas for yachts, a helipad, and luxurious accommodations for guests and staff.
After his son’s death, the atmosphere on the island changed dramatically, with mourning permeating every corner. However, Christina Onassis tried to bring life to the island in the 1980s, when she lived there for extended periods with her then-husband Thierry Roussel. Their daughter, Athina, was born and baptized there. The luxury parties and events continued, but with Christina’s sudden death in 1988, the Onassis era on Scorpios seemed to be drawing to a close.
In 2013, the ‘golden heiress’ Athina Onassis sold Scorpios to Russian billionaire Dmitry Rybolovlev for more than 100 million euros. From the start, his vision was to upgrade the island to an ultra-luxurious resort for the global elite.
The investment, which started with a budget of 165 million euros, has now exceeded 400 million. The project, overseen by the renowned architectural firm Snøhetta, is rumored to offer an experience of ultimate luxury, akin to scenes from James Bond movies.
According to reports, a week’s stay on the island can cost up to 1 million euros, with a limited number of visitors, not exceeding 50 people at a time. The new resort will include all necessary amenities to offer a unique experience: villas, spas, courts, a helipad, yacht docks, and even vineyards and a farm. Additionally, the resort will be guarded by snipers and security cameras, ensuring absolute protection for its guests.
The project is expected to be completed in the coming years, but it has been delayed so far. Despite this, Scorpios is expected to return to the global spotlight, once again attracting the planet’s elite to one of the most luxurious resorts ever created.
